Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever, and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition, seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence; and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.
Jane Austen. Emma, Chapter 1.
Emma is one of my favourite Austen’s characters. She is an intelligent young woman who has everything she could ever wish. Though she may seem perfect, she is actually flawed in a way that makes her really relatable and authentic.
She spends most of the novel trying to arrange the lives of the people around her. After having organized a wedding between her governess and Mr Weston, she is in search of a new form of entertainment. Soon enough, she befriends Miss Harriet Smith, who instantly becomes her best friend.
Throughout the story, Emma will try to find a husband for Harriet despite the warnings of her friend Mr Knightly, the family’s closest relation.
If you like realistic romantic stories set in the nineteenth century, you should definitely read it! You can download it for free on Amazon.

If you are a fan of Jane Austen, you will probably want to watch the new 2020 Autumn de Wilde adaptation of Emma, starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Johnny Flynn. Here is the trailer of the movie!
