Book Review: The Stolen Elixirs

The Stolen Elixirs, by Monique Bird

Set in a mythical kingdom, The Stolen Elixirs tells the story of 17-year-old potion-maker, Katrina. After being ignored by her crush for the whole of two years, she is completely dazed when Henry starts spending most of his time with her. But when he steals two of her mother’s most powerful potions, she realizes he might not be the kind, good-hearted man she imagined.

In a desperate attempt to recover those precious elixirs, Katrina sets on a dangerous journey to the city of Kendor. During her trip, she meets Ben, a friend of hers who decides to help, but whose bad luck curse puts them right into the path of a madman willing to kill whoever gets in his way.

Now, Katrina must fight the mutated animals the madman sends after her, stop Henry from misusing her elixirs, and protect her new friend’s life. All this while trying to stop herself from falling for a charming sailor she keeps running into but isn’t sure she can trust.

Personal Comments

I must admit that when I first started reading this story, I didn’t like it that much. The first chapter starts with Alex, the madman, testing his new potions on his favourite pet. It was just disgusting and completely terrifying. However, once the story gets going, it becomes much more enjoyable. I loved reading about Katrina’s adventures and how she tried to do her best even in the toughest situations.

As for the characters, although I found them pretty compelling, I would have liked to get to know them better. Throughout the story, we learn very little about their interests and fears and only get a quick glimpse into their personality. In my opinion, this made them look quite plain, which is why I felt they could have been a bit more developed and weighty. However, it may have been a result of the complex storyline of the novel. The plot is so gripping and easy to understand it makes you want to finish the book in one seat!
