I have always loved reading. When I was little, my mum used to take me to this huge library called El Ateneo and let me wander through the kid’s section until I found some books I liked. I remember I always finished them in less than a week. Not much has changed since then. Here is a list of three of my favourite books from childhood!
1. The Cucumber King, by Christine Nöstlinger
I read this book in Spanish under the title of “Nos importa un comino el Rey Pepino”. I had so much fun! It tells the story of a Cucumber King who lives in the basement of a typical family household. After being overthrown by his subjects for being a terrible ruler, he is forced to live with the human family upstairs. The way he bossed people around and expected everyone to treat him as a real king even though he was only a cucumber made me laugh so much! It immediately became one of my favourite childhood books.
2. Heidi, by Johanna Spyri
I loved this book. Set in the Swiss village of Dörfli, this classic tells the story of a little girl called Heidi who moves with her grandfather to a house in the mountains. I remember I was fascinated with the setting of the story. The Alps seemed so peaceful and magnificent! I have wanted to visit them ever since. Besides, I was fond of Heidi’s personality. I admired her enthusiasm and intelligence and wanted to be just like her.
Heidi is a heart-warming, inspiring story I think everyone should read! Here you can find some reviews.
“The happiest of all things is when an old friend comes and greets us as in former times; the heart is comforted with the assurance that some day everything that we have loved will be given back”
Johanne Spyri – Heidi

3. Caídos del Mapa, by María Inés Falconi
Caídos del Mapa is an Argentine book series written by María Inés Falconi. It tells the story of four friends who sneak out of geography class and hide in the school’s basement. I loved it because it was really easy and fun to read, and the characters were so relatable! It was definitely one of the most important books in my childhood.
That’s all for now! What were your favourite books when you were a kid?
